The field services industry is compartmentalized into four major areas. These areas are mortgage inspections, insurance inspections, commercial inspections and property preservation. Which direction should I take?
Mortgage inspections are a DEAD SPOT in the industry. It is the home of $3 … $4 … $5 low-fee inspections and 99% of all of the problems in the field services industry. You can easily pickup a huge volume of these low-fee inspections. The turnaround time is about seven days. The inspection tasks are not evenly distributed over the month. After a month or so, you will discover that you have not made any money and you are wearing out your vehicle with all of the starting and stopping. Each mortgage inspection will require about seven photographs. If you perform 500 mortgage inspections, you will be required to manage and upload about 3,500 digital photos. Some firms will demand that you service large areas and also visit high crime neighborhoods. You will most likely be required to purchase errors and omissions (E&O) insurance.
Property preservation consists of tasks of lock changes, grass cuts, debris removal, winterizations, window boarding, and evictions on foreclosure properties. You will need a truck, a trailer and some heavy-duty lawn cutting equipment. You will need liability insurance and maybe also E&O insurance. There is good money to be made here when working for the right customers. Richard Law has written a 300-page book on property preservation … www.sofistore.com
Commercial inspections are a SWEET SPOT in the industry. Here you will find the higher quality firms that pay the higher fees. Here you will find a lot of 10 – 15 minute inspections that pay $20 – $60. Some inspections will pay as high as $300. Usually, no insurance is required. Most part-timers take the commercial inspection direction to make some extra money. The National Field Service Directory at www.sofistore.com is focused on the firms that task out the commercial inspections.
