I Said No Thanks … They Asked For Too Much Information

takling-cartoon-300x205This national field services firm has an application form that asks for my weight. I am about 20 pounds over weight. So, does my weight affect my field inspection job performance? They also asked for the color of my hair and eyes. Would green hair disqualify me? Does that sound like profiling to you? I’m trying to decide if I should email them my Brad Pitt photo or my Robert Redford photo. What are they looking for? I don’t smoke … should I add that in the comments section of the application. I hate cats … will that help me get the job? I could knock off the pizza twice a week and lose some pounds … but, I love pizza with all of the toppings. Maybe I should just pass on the firm as I can’t give up pizza!

  1. OK, here’s a new one. I have a company that just contacted me today after seeing my SOFI ad that wants me to do commercial insurance loss control inspections. The money they’re proposing is about right, and they let me choose my work volume, which is good because I really just need a little gap-filling right now.

But in addition to a criminal background check (no problem as long as they pay for it), they also want me to pass a drug screen. Again, no problem for me as long as they pay for it, but isn’t this going a little bit too far for an independent contractor? Aren’t they raising the level of expectation to that of employee with that kind of request? Thoughts?

  2. BG check OK, screening does push it a little. I’d inquire as to why the screening…maybe you don’t get a BS answer for it.

Speaking of the BG check, I turned down a place (national-type firm) as they wanted me to pay the $35 for the BG check. Ummm, nope!
