Seniors are working longer because they enjoy the extra money from part-time work. Many seniors take up part-time jobs like field service inspections. Below was some comments from Jim in Florida … a field inspector working part-time over the last 11 years.

“I’ll be 73 in February and I’ve been doing field inspections since 2003.  $30,000 is very doable for someone my age working part time.   

Even through I had insurance experience when I started (I was an independent agent years ago and I also retired from Prudential), I found out right away that I needed some training.  About 10 years ago, I went to NJ for a week and took the Direct Loss Control classroom training.  It’s the best thing I did in this business.  I’ve never had trouble getting as many commercial insurance inspections as I can do.

I was also able to start a small regional mortgage inspection business when the housing bubble burst.  You’re right about the volume dropping.  At one time I had about 15 inspectors in NE Florida.  Now, we still do about 1100 houses per month, just enough to keep my grand daughter and a son busy and earning a living.  They don’t do $3 inspections though.

I personally only do commercial insurance inspections myself.  I’m on a break from work right now while I get some medical treatment, but I expect to be back in action in early 2015.  I never burn any bridges in this business.  I found a great regional inspection company in Florida a few years ago and most of my work has been for them for the last few years.  My SOFI ad has been paying off this year as I have also done work in 2014 for 3 other companies.
