Specialize … Diversify … Make More Money!

pgI met a female field inspector in April 2013 who performs playground inspections for homeowner associations. She does very well with these and she has also become even more diversified by expanding into commercial insurance loss control inspections. The key to success is specialization and diversification. Make it happen!

  1. I live in the heart of the poultry industry. There are hundreds of chicken houses located within 50 miles of me. Can anyone enlighten me how to find a client who specializes in poultry farms?

  2. Commercial insurance inspection firms have work orders for the liability insurance on poultry farms. I did one once, but they are tough. These are secure, sterile installations, and though they are mostly family/privately owned, they are under severe contractual obligations to the company they are sending their chickens and eggs to. You can’t take pictures inside them because, they say, what goes on in there is proprietary trade secrets. But they probably also don’t want you seeing any dead chickens — which happens even at the best of farms — and taking pictures of them. And if they do “intensive” chicken farming, the conditions aren’t pretty.

That said, the work order for liability insurance requires some pictures taken inside the building. The folks at the place I went to, which was actually a free-range-type building where the chickens roam free on an open floor, were not going to let me inside under any circumstances, so to satisfy the work order, they agreed to take my camera and take pictures for me of the stuff I needed. I didn’t feel good about that, but the company I worked for and the insurer did not object when I told them. Not their first rodeo, apparently.

  3. I believe the companies that buy the product inspect the growers. (ie Tyson) I am a former dog kennel inspector and many of my breeders had bird buildings and raised turkeys and chickens. There are USDA and state inspectors as well.
