337_5Too big is not good. Keep your service area small. Stay close to home and increase your volume by working for more high quality customers that pay the higher fees. Overload will kill your business. Too big a service area with destroy your efficiency and your profits. When you try to do too much, you usually create problems. Keep your service area small! Your response time will improve and you will earn more money. Avoid any firm that dictates your “zone” of service. You are in charge of your business and you need to keep it that way. Don’t be bullied into large service areas. Keep your service area small.

  1. That’s great advice, but keep in mind that some vendors make you take multiple zip codes which you end up “sharing” with someone else anyway. Their reasoning is that you may have a lot of volume in a couple zip codes and that makes up for and balances out the others that you have to drive all over hall half acre to get to and only have one or two there anyway. I got my feet wet with a vendor like this, I was spending way more time and gas than was necessary because of how they ran their company. I have since been lucky enough to expand to other vendors and choose my own zip codes so that my footprint from home is pretty small.
