Used Clothes Dryers Under $100 … Who Is Sember Lynn Smathers?

Sember Lynn Smathers, 49, formerly of Shelby, North Carolina, a former real estate agent, pleaded guilty on Monday, August 26, 2013, to selling household appliances she unlawfully removed from vacant homes owned by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Court records indicate that in one instance, Smathers and another person were conducting a “clean out” while subcontractors were working at the same vacant HUD property. When the subcontractors questioned Smathers about the removal of the appliances from the home, Smathers falsely represented that she and her co-conspirator also worked for the same subcontractors and had been directed to remove the appliances from the home. Court records show that Smathers stole over $13,678 worth of appliances from the vacant homes.

Smathers has been released on bond pending sentencing. She faces a maximum prison term of five years and a $250,000 fine. A sentencing date for Smathers has not been set yet.

Anne M. Tompkins, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina announced the guilty plea. U.S. Attorney Tompkins is joined in making the announcement by Lester Fernandez, Special Agent in Charge, Office of the Inspector General, Office of Investigation of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD – OIG).

  1. I walked in the middle of an unlawful appliance sale here in Cental indiana last year. The person who was selling the stuff had them unhooked from the wall very professionally, nothing torn up. As I arrived he got out of his car stated he was glad that I was there and he had my appliances ready at door. I told him who I was and to wait in his car because I can’t have anyone inside while inspecting. I called my company and told them what was going on and they said to call the police. I went back outside to try and detain or get as much info as i could The sellers got scared and took off. AS I was on the phone to cops the buyer showed up as they pulled off and he said thru the commotion that he was an off duty local officer and gave chase to the theives. He didn’t catch them but was embarressed because his wife answered off craigs list and he was on his way to pick them up!

  2. Nice. Idiot. I tell you though, I joke to myself sometimes with all the vacant walk-through/inspections I do that I could get into the appliance business. And I’m sure 95% I can remove and no one would know until well after the fact. Namely since you don’t try to mess with the HUD homes….
