The Service companies are greedy and want to make a average of 80% for being middleman. What is there problem when we do 90% of the work, without the qualified property inspectors they have no income period. Stop working for FREE.
I do not accept jobs that offer no compensation for travel time and expense. If a vendor wants to dance they need to pay the fiddler! $20.00 per hour for total time is reasonable. If you get 20 miles per gallon on gas you will at least break even on expenses and time traveled. Using three gallons of gas @ 60 miles per hour highway costs $10.00-$15.00 leaving $5.00 to $10.00 for your time driving. I believe this should be a Minimum, base line fee. Combine this with job fee paid will provide minimum wage level reimbursement. You can make more profit when combining more than one job per trip. None of us need more expense deductions for taxes….we need more income to offset expenses.
My experience is that you will loose jobs from low payers until they can’t find anyone to perform just for their fees. Then they will negotiate a better fee for service. Low pay IS NOT their fault. It is OUR fault for accepting low pay. STOP WORKING FOR NOTHING!!!!
If you have a lot of competing inspectors in your service area, try to find a specialty that sets you apart from the rest. Commercial property and Loss Control inspections pay the best in my area. Residential inspections pay poorly and are not concentrated enough to offset travel between properties.
Take the emotion out of price negotiation, and handle all negotiations VIA email. Telephone negotiation increases the possibility of being insulted with low pay offers which make you mad and cause you to say things that will terminate relationships. Use email to negotiate as it provides more time to think your response through and time to plan multiple jobs at the same time which may increase your profitability. STOP WORKING FOR NOTHING!!!!
