I talked to a Texas commercial insurance loss control inspector this week who primarily performs the higher tier fleet inspections, workmen compensation audits and liquor liability inspections. He is working 10-hour days and he is always looking for high quality firms that pay the higher fees. I called him three times this week and he answers this cell phone on about the third ring.
Many of the commercial field service inspectors have no competition. Other inspectors in the same area simply cannot perform. Their telephone voice-mail boxes are full and we all know that a hiring firm only calls once whenever they encounter a full voice-mail box. Some of the competition takes a few days or maybe a week to respond to an email. Some of the competition is chasing $3 mortgage inspections and higher pay inspections seem to be too much work for them, so they pass on them without further investigation.
If you are above average, you have by definition beat out 50% of the competition. If you are above average in the above average group, you are only competing with about 25% of all inspectors in the industry. When you make it to the top 25% group and start to apply better marketing and performance tactics, it is easy to move up to the top 10%. When you’re smart, you don’t have to sweat the competition. When you reach the top 10%, you will want to network with the top 10% that reside in areas that are far away from you and that do not compete with you or you with them.
