How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

I drive a Toyota Prius 2 which gets 52 miles per gallon. Toyota recommends synthetic oil changes at 10,000 miles. CHECK HERE to see the oil change recommendations for your vehicle.

  1. Our local Toyota dealership is still pushing 5K oil changes. No way. With the Prius engine running at 50% vs a standard vehicle’s engine, there is no need. Just make sure to use synthetic oil. Low operating costs of a Prius makes it a plus to use in field work.

  2. A field service inspector in Tampa has a Prius C. He keeps the tank only half-full (maximum) and averages over 60 MPG.

  3. I would much prefer a Volkswagen diesel. Brother in law had a Jetta years ago and got 50+ MPG. Now with the government scandal you can probably buy a used one at a bargain price and if you live in an area without the emissions hassle then you can just keep on driving. Diesels are much simpler to operate with no ignition system and the attendent timing they are more reliable, with the fuel having a lubricating property the engines outlast gas burners 2:1. Ran the numbers for my son on whether it paid to buy a hybrid Tahoe or regular one and you would have to drive 100,000 miles on $4 gas to make up the difference on the extra cost of the vehicle. They have made all the engines switch off electronic valve v8’s so it runs as a 4 when cruising on the road which improved mileage 30% Larry P
