You Get Only ONE CHANCE To Get It Right!

Read the email 7 times and never responded.

The key to growing a field services business is be responsive and reliable. I find that a lot of field service representatives are not very responsive. They do not answer emails and telephone calls. Hiring firms only give you ONE CHANCE to respond to an email or to a telephone call. When there is no response, you do NOT get the job. They go to the next person on their list. You go into their dead file … the R.I.P. file …. the rest in peace file. They will never attempt to contact you again. As far as they are concerned, you are DEAD.

Field service representative communications are easy to analyze. If I send you an email, I can easily determine when you first opened the email, how many times you read the email and if you have forwarded the email. If there is an attachment, I can determine if you opened it and how many times you re-opened it. If there is a link, I can determine if you have opened the link and how many times you have re-opened the link. I know your IP address and what device opened the email (computer, tablet, phone). I know which operating system and which browser you used to open the email. I know if you forwarded the email and how many times you forwarded the email. You broadcast a lot of information about your communication habits without ever even responding to an email. You don’t have to respond to an email for me to know that you have read it and to collect all of the information I described above.

All of this information paints a picture of your responsiveness and reliability. I am sure that some of the national and regional hiring firms are accessing this same communications information and making an assessment as to whether they want to hire you or keep you as a field service representative. It’s so easy to determine your communication habits.

  1. I am good about responding to emails and calls. There have been two exceptions, both times I was unexpectedly hospitalized for a week each time. I lost 2 clients this year because I could not respond and trying to explain after the fact fell on deaf ears.

  2. If the folks only care about the moment then they can find someone else. I have been traveling and answered as soon as I was able to and was completely ignored. The money they pay is not worth the heart ache. They are not the only fish in the sea.
